___ is published at regular intervals and usually emanates from learned societies or associations

### Why this is right A publication issued repeatedly on a schedule is called a **periodical**. Journals are periodicals commonly produced by learned societies or professional associations to share research and specialist writing, which matches the description. ### The concept A journal usually focuses on a particular academic or professional subject. It may publish research articles, reviews, or reports in successive issues, often several times a year. Some journals assess research articles through **peer review**, a process in which other specialists evaluate the work before publication. A magazine is generally aimed at a broad readership, while a newspaper reports current events and an encyclopaedia summarizes information for reference. | Publication | Typical purpose | |---|---| | Journal | Shares research or specialist writing | | Magazine | Provides articles for a general or interest-based readership | | Newspaper | Reports current news | | Encyclopaedia | Summarizes topics for reference | ### The other options - **A. Magazine**: Usually presents general-interest or hobby-related articles for a broad audience. It is tempting because magazines, like journals, appear in regular issues. - **B. Newspaper**: Primarily reports recent events and is usually published daily or weekly. Its regular schedule fits, but its main purpose is news reporting. - **D. Encyclopaedia**: Collects summaries of topics for readers to consult as a reference. It is not usually issued as a continuing series of research-focused issues. ### Terms - **Periodical**: A publication released in successive issues at regular or planned intervals. - **Learned society**: An organization whose members share and advance knowledge in a subject or profession. - **Peer review**: Evaluation of scholarly work by other specialists before it is published. ### Remember If the description emphasizes research or specialist writing from an academic association, choose **journal**; if it emphasizes current events, choose **newspaper**.
